Military Wedding – How Does it Work?
June 19, 2024
If you have a partner deployed, how does a military wedding work? A military wedding is possible even if you and/or your partner is deployed. As long as one of you is in the state of Kansas, or can get to Kansas for the ceremony, you can get legally married with a military proxy wedding. The practice of proxy marriages has a long history, often providing practical purposes in times of conflict or when physical presence is not possible.
There are plenty of reasons military marriage is complicated. Deployments, frequent moves and long training absences make planning the wedding difficult, let alone navigating the marriage itself. Sometimes the thought of even getting a military wedding seems impossible with everything going on, but thankfully the process can be made easier with a proxy wedding. Once you have filled out and submitted the initial contact form, your military wedding can become a reality. Weddings by Proxy has been performing military proxy weddings for active-duty military personnel for years. In the case of military personnel, this proxy marriage often happens in one of these common situations:
- When they are deployed or stationed overseas, and they cannot be in the US to get married to their US partner
- It may also happen with military personnel who are engaged to a non-US citizen and the proxy stands in for the military person overseas
- When both partners are military personnel stationed overseas and don’t want to wait to get married until they are back in the US, for legal benefits or other reasons.
We will contact you to gain an understanding of your situation and then work with you and on your behalf to get all the legal requirements handled. The entire process takes about 3 weeks from the time that we receive all the state required, completed forms and documents to the time we receive an official marriage certificate from the state of Kansas. In some cases, this process can be accelerated. Once the military wedding ceremony is performed and the official marriage certificate is filed, your marriage is legal and recognized by every state and all branches of the military.

There are some that offer a proxy wedding using methods that are not compliant with the proxy wedding laws in Kansas.
